This guide explains how to use cPanel’s Backup Wizard, a simplified, step-by-step tool for creating and restoring backups. It is ideal for beginners or anyone who prefers a guided process over the standard Backup interface.
- What the Backup Wizard Does
The Backup Wizard provides a streamlined way to:
- Create full account backups
- Create partial backups (home directory, databases, email)
- Restore partial backups
- Download backup files to your computer
It does not allow restoring full account backups — only partial ones.
- Accessing the Backup Wizard
- Log in to your cPanel dashboard.
- Scroll to the Files section.
- Select Backup Wizard.
You will see two main options: Backup and Restore.
- Creating a Backup
Step 1: Choose Backup
Click Backup to begin the process.
Step 2: Choose Backup Type
You will see two options:
- Full Backup
- Partial Backup
Full Backup
Includes everything in your account:
- Website files
- Databases
- Email accounts
- DNS settings
- Home directory
To create a full backup:
- Click Full Backup.
- Choose a Backup Destination (Home Directory is most common).
- Enter your email address if you want a completion notification.
- Click Generate Backup.
The backup will be created and stored in your home directory.
Partial Backup
You can download individual components:
- Home Directory
- MySQL Databases
- Email Forwarders
- Email Filters
Click the item you want to download and save it to your computer.
- Restoring a Backup
The Backup Wizard can restore partial backups only.
Step 1: Choose Restore
Click Restore on the main Backup Wizard screen.
Step 2: Choose What to Restore
You can restore:
- Home Directory
- MySQL Databases
- Email Forwarders
- Email Filters
Step 3: Upload the Backup File
- Click the type of backup you want to restore.
- Click Choose File.
- Select the backup file from your computer.
- Click Upload.
The system will restore the selected data.
- When to Use the Backup Wizard
The Backup Wizard is ideal when:
- You want a simple, guided backup process
- You need to restore a specific part of your account
- You want to download backups before making changes
- You prefer a beginner-friendly interface
For advanced users or full account restores, the standard Backup tool or manual restoration may be more appropriate.
- Best Practices for Using the Backup Wizard
- Download backups to your computer or cloud storage regularly
- Keep multiple versions in case one becomes corrupted
- Always back up before updates, migrations, or major changes
- Avoid storing too many backups on your hosting account to save disk space
- Troubleshooting Common Backup Wizard Issues
Full Backup Not Downloadable
- Full backups must be downloaded from File Manager or via FTP
- The Backup Wizard does not provide direct download links for full backups
Restore Fails
- The file may be too large
- The file may not be a valid cPanel backup
- Try restoring via the standard Backup tool or phpMyAdmin (for databases)
Backup Not Generating
- Your account may be low on disk space
- Delete old backups or unused files and try again
Database Restore Errors
- The database may already exist
- Ensure the file is a .sql.gz backup created by cPanel
