Getting Started with cPanel

This guide introduces the cPanel dashboard and walks you through the essential tools you’ll use to manage your hosting environment, including files, email, databases, domains, backups, and analytics.

  1. Logging In to cPanel

You can access your cPanel account using one of the following URLs:

Enter the username and password from your Stormy Hosting welcome email.
Once logged in, you’ll be taken to the main cPanel dashboard.

  1. Navigating the Dashboard

The cPanel home screen is organised into sections such as:

  • Files
  • Databases
  • Domains
  • Email
  • Metrics
  • Security

If you’re looking for something specific, use the search bar at the top of the page to quickly locate tools and features.

  1. Managing Files

You have two main options for managing your website files:

File Manager

A built‑in tool that works like a standard file explorer. You can upload, edit, delete, and organise files directly in your browser.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)

For larger uploads or ongoing development, you can connect using an FTP client such as FileZilla.
Your FTP settings and account management options are available under FTP Accounts.

  1. Setting Up Email Accounts

Under Email Accounts, you can create and manage email addresses associated with your domain.

You can access your email through:

  • Webmail (e.g., Roundcube)
  • A desktop email client
  • A mobile email app

Each method uses the login details you create in cPanel.

  1. Creating Databases

Many applications (such as WordPress) require a MySQL database.

In cPanel you can:

  • Create databases
  • Add database users
  • Assign permissions

To manage your database directly, use phpMyAdmin, which allows you to run queries, import/export data, and perform advanced operations.

  1. Managing Domains

cPanel lets you manage multiple domain types:

  • Addon Domains - host additional domains under one account
  • Subdomains - e.g., blog.example.com
  • Redirects - forward one URL to another (e.g., /blogblog.example.com)

These tools are found under the Domains section.

  1. Installing Applications

Stormy Hosting includes Softaculous, a one‑click installer for popular applications such as:

  • WordPress
  • MediaWiki
  • Drupal
  • Joomla

Softaculous handles the installation process automatically, making it ideal for beginners.

  1. Backups

The Backup Wizard allows you to:

  • Create full or partial backups
  • Download backups to your computer
  • Restore your site if needed

Regular backups are strongly recommended to protect your data.

  1. Using Metrics and Analytics

cPanel provides several tools to help you understand your website’s performance:

  • Awstats - detailed traffic statistics
  • Bandwidth - monitor usage to avoid unexpected limits

These tools help you track visitors, resource usage, and overall site health.

Tips for Using cPanel Efficiently

  • Explore the interface - Familiarity makes management easier.
  • Use built‑in help - Many tools include documentation links.
  • Back up regularly - Protect your site from accidental changes or data loss.
